“What?”
“Danny Cahill is planning to run for alderman in the next election. He broke the news to Alan today. Unfortunately, that part of the conversation happened when I was en route to the Rose to listen in, but Chloe heard it.”
“What does this have to do with us?”
“It’s the way Alan reacted. He didn’t come right out with a confession, of course, but he berated Danny, talking about how the vetting process will dig up all of his transgressions. Then he drilled him on why you were working there. We know Alan doesn’t trust you, but now Danny admitted that part of the reason for your promotion was to keep you close. Keep you happy, and just a little dirty, so you don’t get suspicious.”
“I guess he wasn’t counting on me coming in with my suspicions.”
“This election bid is just what we need. Danny needs to stay clean, so if his father did something to Dad, he’ll want to distance himself. If Danny was the culprit, he’ll be working double-time to make sure nothing sees the light of day.”
Now Ronan saw where Brendan was going with this. “You think sending Nolan in to push a few buttons will work.”
“I think if Nolan hits the right buttons, it’ll send them both over the edge.”
“How do we figure out what those buttons are?”
“Dad. He’s gotta be the trigger. Danny was openly discussing his addictions with his father. He plans to get out in front of that. Make himself seem more average Joe, someone people can relate to since he’s overcome his addictions.”
“And if his focus is split between keeping an eye on me and looking pretty for the public, he won’t see Nolan coming.”
“Exactly. Now we just need a plan.”
They spent the next couple of hours searching out information about Danny and his election aspirations. Other candidates were filing and announcing this week. Ronan never paid much attention to local politics, but seeing it laid out like this made it obvious that Danny was waiting for the perfect time to let the city know that the Cahill legacy was in play.
Ronan wanted nothing more than to take them down.
