The Intern: The Billionaire's Successor - Page 114

Hours later, we’re still awake. We’ve moved away from the window and we’re lying in my bed on my Target sheets with Davis holding me close. He keeps whispering sweetly into my ear, and every time I’m about to doze off he comes up with another doting thing to say that sends my heart racing and keeps sleep at bay.

“You deserve this,” I hear him say. “And I deserve this too. We both deserve to be so happy, Olivia. I think we’ve earned this.”

“Nobody could ever deserve you,” I tease.

“You do,” he insists. “You push me to be better. You set the right boundaries. You never ask me for anything. Hell, you even indulge me sometimes and let me spoil you rotten. But the thing I love most about you, Olivia, is that you’ve never quit. You’ve never quit on yourself, or on Charlie, or even me when I worked so hard to get you to break that contract.”

“It wasn’t an option.”

“I know. People like me, we can quit all the time. There are no consequences. But you’re different, and I want you to know that I think about that every day. I’m done quitting on Kieran. I’m not quitting on FundRight. And I didn’t quit on you—not again, at least. I’ve learned a hell of a lot from you in nine years, Olivia Nolan. I’m more grateful for that than I could ever tell you.”

I kiss him softly. “We can spend the next ninety years figuring that out.”

“Ninety? That’s optimistic.”

Laughing, I snuggle up against him and press my ear to his heart. “Well, you make me feel like I can dream of things that I once thought were just fairytales.”

Davis takes his hand and places it on the back of my head, holding it against his chest like he wants me to hear how quickly his heart still beats when I’m in his arms. “Then fuck it,” he replies, tickling my hair lightly as he speaks. “I’m ready for the next ninety years.”
