He glances at where my hand is touching him. “Well, you passed out before Jake threatened to beat me up. Said I couldn't be your friend anymore.”
I pull my hand back and open my eyes wide. “I’m sorry, what?”
He glances my way. “Yeah, he was pissed. Said I had bad intentions.”
“Did you?” I ask.
He glances my way again and runs his eyes down me. “My only intention was to make you happy.”
I am not sure whether or not to believe him. I never thought he was trying to be anything more than my friend, but with the way he’s looking at me now, I don’t know what to think.
“You did,” I whisper.
“Hm?” he asks.
“You did make me happy,” I clarify.
He smiles as he glances at me again. “Good,” he says before focusing back on the road.
We pull into the parking lot shortly after since it wasn’t too far away from the house. They are getting married right by the water. The actual ceremony is being held inside so there is air conditioning, but there are huge tents and a dance floor located right out by the water. It will probably cool down a little in the evening, so it will be perfect.
Reed turns the truck off, and I turn to him before getting out. “Is Katie here?”
He frowns as he looks my way. “She’s on her way.”
I nod and blow out a breath. I give him an awkward smile as I open the door. “If you guys get tired of being all lovey dovey, I could use some people to hang out with tonight.”
He raises his eyebrows. “You’ll hang out with Katie?” he asks, sounding dramatically shocked.
“It’d be better than your mom,” I mumble.
He closes his eyes tight for a moment. “How did I get myself into such a fucked up situation?” he groans.
I smirk. “Should have convinced me to sleep with the grocery store manager. If I wasn’t so horny, maybe I would have left you alone.”
I shrug and then turn to leave the truck, but Reed grabs my arm to stop me. I glance back at him over my shoulder. His eyes are more intense than before and his face more serious. “You ended that because you wanted to. You fucking wanted me.”
Fuck. I can’t deny that. Why does he always have to be so blunt?
“Does that bother you?” I ask.
His eyes fall to my mouth then back to my eyes. “It should.”
“Will you be home tonight?” I ask.
His lips twitch into a smile. “Yes,” he says confidently.
And fuck, who knew one word could carry so much weight? I can’t hold back the smile on my face as my cheeks heat. I’ve never wanted to be home so bad in my life.
“Okay,” I whisper as I hop out of the truck. I turn my head back and look at him one more time before I walk away into the ceremony area while he waits for Katie outside.
I really regret not bringing a date to this. I didn’t want people to be talking about me though, so I couldn’t bring a guy. I guess I could have brought a friend, but I’m not close enough with the people from my work. I don’t really have anyone else right now.
I glance to my left again where Reed and Katie are sitting. Just like all the other times I’ve looked, Reed glances my way like he can feel me staring at him. The smirk on his face tells me he likes it.
My phone lights up in my lap. Luckily, I remembered to turn it on silent. I glance down and see Reed’s name on the screen. I open the message immediately.
Reed: The bride and groom are at the front of the room.
I glance his way again, and he bites his lip to hide his smile. That fucker. I grin down at my phone.
Me: I know I was being all cool earlier, but I wouldn’t be mad if you scooched a few inches away from her.
I watch him as he smirks at his phone. He leans back and reaches his right arm around the back of the bench around Katie. He texts me back with his phone in his left hand.
Reed: But she’s so cozy.
I give a disbelieving smile at my phone. Oh no he did not just say that.
Me: You’re going to regret starting this game.
He doesn’t hold back his smile this time when he glances down at his phone. He waits a few more seconds before picking it up and responding.
Reed: I’ll tell you now how it ends.
I glance his way, and he winks. My phone lights up again.
