“Not necessarily and honestly, the best bet there would have been Anton and he’s dead.”
“Why him?” Walter asked.
“Right before your team left, he filled out a complaint about you.”
“Are you serious? Why is this the first I’m hearing about it?” Walker shifted to a sitting position. He stared at her with wide eyes. “Anton and I were pretty tight and he was one of the best men on my team. I trusted him.”
“It hadn’t been filed, but it was found on his desk. He said you were reckless in the field and made poor decisions.”
“I’d like to see this report.”
“I took some things with me when I left the CIA that I wasn’t supposed to. That was one of them because when I interviewed his family, they had nothing but wonderful things to say about you. They said Anton told them you were the best team leader he’d ever had, so I wasn’t buying it. But I was removed from the investigation shortly after we returned.”
“I can understand why your superiors did that.” He squeezed her shoulders. “We were both too close to what happened. However, time and space have given us some perspective. I want to revisit it. Are you willing to do that with me?”
“Absolutely,” she said.
“Good. Now let’s get some sleep.” He wrapped his arms around her body and pulled her tight against him.
She wasn’t used to snuggling next to someone for the night, but this she could get used to.
