Fay's Six

“Only my sister.” His heart filled with a combination of pain and joy all at once. He missed Tammy so much sometimes it hurt. Yet, having been her brother had been such an honor he couldn’t help but be proud of that fact. “She once told me that one day…” He let the words trail off. This wasn’t love. No one fell in love in a few days.
Of course, he’d known Fay longer than that, but he’d spent more time resenting her and blaming her than he had being attracted to her.
Okay. That wasn’t true. He’d always found her attractive, but he’d allowed his anger toward being forced into early retirement cloud his judgment.
“What did she tell you?”
“It was nothing.” He lifted Fay’s hand and kissed it.
“Obviously it was something, but I understand if you don’t want to tell me.” She rested her head on his chest and snuggled in for the night, but she hadn’t been able to hide the hurt in her eyes.
“She told me someday a woman would come along and change me and my entire philosophy on life.”
“Oh,” Fay said.
“You’ve changed me, Fay.”
“The feeling is mutual,” she whispered.
He closed his eyes. He figured that was about all either one could handle.
For now.
