Fay's Six - Page 45

Vera took the sheet and barely scanned it. “Why is my client really here? Because based on what I’ve found out, you don’t have cause to hold him.”

“I have an eyewitness that saw him slash a young man’s tire and then try to lure him into his vehicle.”

“That’s bullshit,” Randall said. “I didn’t—”

“Don’t say a word.” Vera rested her hand on Randall’s shoulder. “I find it fascinating that whoever has made this allegation did so at a gas station that doesn’t have a working security camera and no one else there can corroborate your witness’s version. So, it’s my client’s word against someone else’s.”

“The security camera was tampered with a few days ago,” Sparrow said. “And we have a copy of a man fitting Randall’s description wearing a dark hoodie at that gas station the day before Levi went missing. We also have footage of Levi pumping gas the day he disappeared. That’s suspicious to me.”

“My client is average build. A hundred men could fit his description, so unless you’ve got his face or physical evidence, you’ve got nothing,” Vera said.

Fay had yet to see the video. All she knew was that the hoodie had been found in Randall’s car when they picked him up and it matched the one in the video.

That wasn’t a smoking a gun.

But it was a start.

“We’ve got the hoodie,” Sparrow said.

“I told you that wasn’t mine.” Randall slapped his hands on the table.

“Stop talking.” Vera squared her shoulders. “What hoodie?”

Sparrow turned and opened the door. “Wilder. Bring in the evidence,” she yelled.

The air in the room grew thick with silence.

Randall rubbed his hands together.

Vera folded hers in her lap.

Sparrow leaned against the wall with her arms crossed over her chest.

Fay kept her mouth shut, even though she had a million questions she wanted to fire at Randall.

Something didn’t add up. This felt off.

Wrong.

But she couldn’t put her finger on it.

The door opened and Wilder stepped in holding a bag with a dark sweatshirt folded neatly inside.

Sparrow tossed it on the table. “We found this in the trunk of Randall’s car.” She leaned over and tapped what appeared to be a logo of some kind.

Fay leaned over to get a better look.

Her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach.

The image was of an oak tree and she’d seen it before on a long-sleeved shirt in Lee’s room. She took in a slow breath. It could be a common designer in men’s clothing.

“This logo matches the one the man wore who took out the security system,” Sparrow said.

“That doesn’t mean that man kidnapped or killed anyone.”

Randall leaned closer to his lawyer. “I swear I’ve never seen that before.”

“This is not enough to hold my client. Either charge him or let him walk.” Vera stood.

“You want the suspicion off you, Randall? Answer my questions. It’s that simple,” Sparrow said.

“I didn’t do anything wrong.” He glanced up at Vera. “I need to clear my name of this.”

Vera smoothed down the front of her suit before adjusting the chair and sitting down. “Pause before answering. That way I can tell you if there is something you shouldn’t respond to.”

Randall nodded.

“You’re not supposed to leave Denver, is that correct?” Fay asked.

“I can visit my mom when I have permission,” Randall said.

“Why did you go to the casino with known criminals?” Sparrow pressed her hands on the table and leaned closer.

She could be intimidating when she wanted to be.

“I was only supposed to pay back my debt. Do it twice and I’d be done. That’s what Chris said.” Randall swiped the tears that dribbled from his eyes and rolled down his cheeks like a drippy faucet. “I didn’t kill those two boys. I swear it.” He held his hands up. “That wasn’t me. I had nothing to do with that and I don’t know who did.”

“Randall, stop talking,” Vera snapped. “I need a moment with my client.” She pointed to the mirror. “I want all cameras and listening devices turned off. This is privileged, got it?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Sparrow opened the door.
