Fay followed her out into the hallway where she was greeted by an incredibly agitated Lee and a not-so-happy Walker.

“What the hell do you think that is about?” Walker asked.

“I have no idea,” Sparrow said.

Lee planted his hands on his hips and mumbled a few obscenities and something else that Fay couldn’t quite make out.

“Do you have something to say, Lee?” Fay asked.

“You don’t want to hear what I’m thinking,” he said.

Fay could only imagine.

“I do,” Sparrow said.

Lee shifted, but he remained in what could only be considered an aggressive stance. “You showed your hand too soon and sadly, it’s a shit hand. There are too many holes.”

“This coming from the guy who saw what he was doing,” Walker said.

Lee blew out a puff of air. “I acted too quickly. I know that now.”

Holy crow. Lee admitted to making a mistake. Hell did freeze over.

“However, Sparrow here compounded my mistake by showing that sweatshirt. It’s nondescript and means shit. I’m sure a hundred people around here have one just like it.”

Fay wanted to point out that he had a shirt with the same logo, but then he’d want to know how she knew that since she’d never seen him wear it. Plus, she wanted to find out where the logo came from. That might be eye opening.

“He and his lawyer are having a conversation that is going to allow him to walk out of here because we’ve got nothing,” Lee said.

Fay opened her mouth but before she could form words, the door opened.

“We need to talk,” Vera said in a shaky voice.

Fay followed Sparrow into the interrogation room. The tension was palpable.

“I need this to be off the record. I want everything to be kept off.” Vera stood at the end of the table. “I need your word that this is a private conversation.”

“I can do that for now,” Sparrow said.

“So can I.” Fay nodded.

“My client didn’t kill those two young men, but he might have information about the two missing boys.” Vera held up her hand. “In exchange for all that information, along with intel about a human trafficking ring, he wants immunity.”

Fay blinked. She lifted her hand and stuck her finger in her ear to make sure she’d heard that correctly.

“I don’t have the authorization to make that deal. I need to bring it to my boss and the district attorney,” Sparrow said. “But I know they aren’t going to go for it unless they have proof.”

“My client can get it, but we need all this in writing,” Vera said.

“I can probably get you a deal faster from the federal government, since this case is going to end up with the FBI,” Fay said. “I can get someone here within the hour, but you’re going to have to agree now and if you go back on your word, the feds are going to come after you and you won’t be able to hide. Not only that, but Chris will know you turned on him, and he’ll come for you too.”

“My client will need witness protection as well.” Vera glanced between Randall and Fay.

“That goes without saying,” Fay said. “I need to know we’ve got a deal and I’ll make the call.”

“If you can protect me and I won’t go back to prison, I will do whatever it takes,” Randall said.
