“No immediate red flags.” She chewed on her lip as she did a quick web search. “It’s another mine. Abandoned. Accommodations could get interesting,” she added. “Pack your thermals.”

“Don’t tell me we’re camping.”

She chuckled. “No. Looks like we’ll be in hotels for most of it. And a dude ranch the director hopes will work for the entire movie.”

“That’d be one hell of a boost for that kind of operation.”

“Right?” She tucked her phone away. “Pack layers, is what I recommend. And all the cool sunglasses.”

He did have an extensive collection. “Trying to show the Californians that rural isn’t the same thing as backward?”

“Maybe just a little,” she confessed with a sly tilt to her mouth. “I’m sure the entire team will be a delight.”

“Uh-huh.” He pulled to a stop in front of her apartment.

She opened her door. “I’ll get familiar with the landowners and surrounding property lines. You get familiar with that ring.”

Glancing at his left hand resting on the steering wheel, he realized he’d forgotten the damn thing. That was unexpected. “I promise.”

She lingered half in and half out of the truck. “So. Um, we’re good?”

“I won’t let you down, Mel.”

“Of course, you won’t.” Her smile blazing with confidence, she closed the door.

He watched her go, that lithe dancer’s body gliding away. Power wasn’t the first word that came to mind when he looked at Melody. But there was no arguing that she was a force of nature. Nothing less—and no one else—could’ve put a wedding band on his finger again.
