“I’m taking first watch.” Words wouldn’t do it, only actions. “In case Atwell makes a move.”

He’d been floundering for ideas, any possible opening. Seeing her standing there, one small tug of the towel away from naked, a plan took root in his heart. He rolled to his feet. Walking to her side of the bed, he lifted the top of her suitcase.

She watched him from the doorway, gaze wary. Mel wasn’t the type to ask for tenderness, but she needed it. Tonight, he’d give her that, show her how much she meant to him. Then, when he did tell her how he felt, she’d believe him.

“I’ve already checked both guns,” he said. “Stowed them where we can get at them if needed.”

“Great. Thanks.”

He pulled snug shorts and an oversized T-shirt from the corner of her luggage. They’d done this often enough, he knew how she packed. With both items in one hand, he walked over to Mel. Her skin was rosy, scented with the heady fragrance of the complimentary honey-almond body lotion.

Atwell might be a criminal bastard, but he’d found the right people and products to make this a luxury experience.

“Step in,” he directed, holding out the shorts. She complied, still frowning, balancing a hand on his shoulder. “Arms up.” Again, she cooperated and he slipped the T-shirt over her head, drawing it down to her hips before he pulled the towel out of the way. He tossed it onto the counter behind her.

“Need anything else?” he asked.

She shook her head, her eyes swimming with questions. He brushed his lips over hers once, twice, loading the soft kisses with all of his love for her. Easing back, he turned her toward the bed and tucked her in.

After turning out the lights, he settled next to her, propping up the pillows as he leaned back against the headboard. Instead of talking, he combed his fingers through her hair until she fell into a deep sleep.
