“Of course.”
“I mean, thank you for everything.”
“You don’t have to thank me, Sara.”
“I mean it, though.”
“Well, you’re welcome. Come here.” He held his arm out and created space in that nook under his shoulder. I only hesitated for a moment. Because this felt like something. A solid step toward the unknown. But the woodsy scent felt like home. So I moved closer, settling up against his body and resting my head on his chest. His arm came down to hold me closer. He kissed the top of my head and then whispered “I’ve got you.”
I breathed in deeply. And then drifted off into the most peaceful sleep I’d had in years.
