“Yup. That stuff . . .”
“But I still want you,” he confessed. “I don’t know how to feel about that. Ever since you got back, you’re all I can think about.”
“The feeling is mutual, and confusing as hell. I want you too, Cade.”
“We need one more night,” he declared.
“What?” I wanted more than one. I had the dreadful feeling that I wanted all his nights, and he would be too afraid I’d leave again to give them to me.
“One more night together to get it out of our system. The other night was an accident. It went by too fast, yet I can’t stop thinking about it. I need one more—”
“Are you sure? Like you said, it was an accident. If we spend another night together it will be deliberate. A choice we can’t play off as a fluke based on our chemistry. I guess what I’m really saying is I don’t want to get hurt. Like, what happens next?”
“But aren’t you hurting right now? I am. We have all these feelings built up between us. We were too young when we split to resolve them—”
“And you think spending the night together will bring us some sort of closure?”
“Yeah, I do. At least I hope so.”
I had my doubts. I knew I would never be able to get him out of my mind. Spending the night with him would end up being a huge mistake, but I didn’t want to say no to him. I wanted to keep the possibility of having him back in my life alive. “Okay. Yes.” His eyes flashed and he squeezed my hand. “I’m counting on it now, Cade. You can’t take it back,” I teased, because I had to lighten the mood.
For now, we were good.
For this moment, I had him back in my life.
Maybe I could just stay in Sweetbriar forever and see what happened. No definitions, no declarations. Just me and him and . . . whatever. We could live one more night into infinity.
“I won’t take it back. There are things I didn’t get to do to you.” His eyes were hot and dark with wicked promise as they burned into mine.
“Oh yeah, like what?” I breathed, pleasantly surprised at the sudden shift in his temperament when I said yes.
“For one, I can’t wait to get my mouth between those pretty thighs again. I miss the way you taste.” I blinked as a startled thrill shot through me at his words.
“God, Cade. I want that. Do you want me to do that thing you like?”
“I want you to do all the things.”
“Will one night be enough? As I remember it, you used to like quite a few of the things I used to do to you.”
He grinned and took my other hand. “We’ll find out, won’t we?”
“My place?” I turned and tugged him along with me as I stood. “Right now? Is your truck at Holloway’s? We can move it to my driveway.” Instead of following me, he pulled me toward him with a hand at the back of my neck and kissed the hell out of me.
“We really should have just gone straight to my place,” I mumbled against his lips, smiling when he chuckled and grabbed my ass.
“You got that right. Let’s get out of here. I’ll make your favorite breakfast in the morning. I’ll even bring it to you in bed and eat you after you eat it.”
“French toast! With that whippy vegan cinnamon cream cheese you always stuff in the middle? And maple syrup? Wait, what was that last thing you said?”
He burst out laughing. “Only my sweet Charlotte would get distracted by the promise of food over the other promise I just made her.”
“Oh no, I’m pretty sure I heard you right. You said you’d go down on me after bringing me breakfast in bed. That’s, like, every woman’s dream. No takesies backsies. It’s a done deal.” I slid my hands up his hard chest and cupped his cheeks in my palms with a huge smile on my face.
He bit his lip. “God, you’re too much. I love it.”
I grabbed his hand and spun us around in a circle before finally finding the way out of the park. He laughed as I led him behind me, jogging across the street to the parking lot.
