Chapter THREE ~ Matthew

The color of brightyellow lights up my vision and I stare at the fresh wet paint on the wall. Stroking my paint brush slowly over the wall repeatedly as I cover up the ugly brown and replace it with something beautiful. Beautiful and bright, just like my floral shop.

I smiled as I laid the paint and gazed at my wrist. Lexi should be here soon, according to my wristwatch, and I couldn’t wait for the extra hands. Painting was tedious work and time-consuming. But doing it myself would cut so much extra cost and I couldn’t turn down the challenge. Besides, painting wasn’t that bad and anyone could do it. Help was just a bonus, and Lexi was more than willing to lend a hand.

I heard the front door open with some force, and a loud bang broke out. Vibrating the wall I paint and I know that irritating problem needs a fix. The entrance door that leads into the store gets jammed and they have assured me they would fix it before the grand opening.

“Morning, beautiful.” Lexi announced as she flexed her muscles and picked up the nearest brush. “Fucking door can’t hold me back.”

I giggled and admired her attire. Her brown hair all pulled up in a messy bun and ratty clothing with holes that had seen better days. Her eyes are bright brown with the usual playful hint inside of them, but mixed with a bit of anger. I narrowed my eyes and pondered what could be the issue. She wasn’t late, but appeared slightly off. I knew my best friend and something was definitely up.

“Something is off with you this morning...” I frowned as I laid on another coat of paint and glanced her way. “What’s going on?”

“Something was definitely off all right.” Lexi huffed and plopped a huge wet glob of paint on the wall. “I had a date last night.”

“Uh oh, I think it didn’t go so well?” I asked with curiosity.

“That’s an understatement.” Lexi glared at the wall and heaved big strokes against it. “The guy was a complete asshole.”

“Oh, no, I’m sorry, but just don’t take it out on my wall, okay?” I teased and gave her a slight smile.

“Well, I wish I could take it out on him, but the jerk took off.” She confessed as she shrugged her shoulders and turned towards me. Yellow paint flew through the air and onto her clothing as she flung around quickly. “And I was stupid enough to sleep with that asshole on the first date.”

“Lexi! You know that’s the number one rule you shouldn’t do on the first date.” I said as I turned to my best friend and knew she needed my full attention.

Forget the fucking painting for just a couple of minutes.

“I know, Cassie, but I was so fucking horny and he looked dead sexy in a tight t-shirt with jeans.” Lexi groaned as she slumped down on the nearest chair and described her story. “He took me to a nice dinner. It was so fucking sweet and I couldn’t resist his charm. The sex was on fire and I fell asleep thinking this was it. I woke up this morning, and he’s gone. Vanishes and leaves me alone with a fake phone number for our local pizza joint.”

“What an asshole!” I exhaled heavily and scrunched up my face. “Well, at least you know what he’s really like before the relationship went any further.”

“Yep, you’re right...” Lexi sighed as she picked her paintbrush and dabbed me playfully on the nose with bright yellow paint. “But my date was nothing compared to your unforgettable one-night stand with the gorgeous Mr. Dixon.”

I grinned wickedly and my cheeks flushed as I laughed. Smearing bright yellow paint on her clothes for payback, but I know she’s right. I never get to live it down and she makes sure of it. I made the mistake of getting caught up in lust just for one night with my tits on display for everyone to see. Lost in hot and heavy passion with a man who drove me absolutely wild.

A man who I’ve never seen again.

Lexi got back to work, and I'm lost in my memory. The memory of that night six long months ago and I remember every minute. Every touch, kiss, tease and word. It drew my body and mind to him unlike any other man. Everything about him seemed so wrong, but felt so right. His skin was soft, but veiny with hard edges. Wanting to explore every inch of his flesh and feel him light me on fire. He lived up to it and the sex was the best I’ve ever had. Unforgettable and undeniable.

Just like him.

But he never returned. Never came back looking for me and it makes me wonder. I knew so little about him and it left my imagination running wild since he left that day. Leaving that one note with those few words that means so much to me. It meant so much that I’ve kept it tucked here in a drawer at the floral shop. Never telling a soul about it, not even my best friend.

What could’ve happened to him?

Where was he?

“Earth to Cassie...” Lexi said as she snapped her fingers in front of my face and raised her eyebrows. “You have a hot visitor lurking out front of the shop.”

I shook my head and snapped out of my memory. “Oh? I wonder who that could be?”

“I don’t know, but girl, if you don’t snatch him up, then I will.” Lexi announced as she hungrily eyed the man up and licked her lips with delight.

I giggled as I headed towards the front entrance and dropped the paintbrush. The man paced out front on the sidewalk and it made me curious. He holds his hands up to the large clean windows to peer inside and goes to the door, giving it a tug. But he can’t get inside and I frown.

What the hell could the guy want?

I got to the door with confusion laid out on my face. Giving the door a push, realizing it’s stuck and letting out a low grumble. “Goddamn piece of shit...”

Knowing I have to give it much more force in order for it to open. I grabbed on tightly and braced my other hand against the wall. Holding down the handle and pushing the door open with powerful force just as he tries to open it on the other side. And the door smacks him right on the forehead.

“Ah, shit!” He winced with pain as he staggered backwards and held his hand to his forehead.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” I blurted out a lame ass apology as I opened the door and reached out to touch his shoulder. “The door must’ve jammed because it needs to be fixed.”

He looked up at me with his hand still on his forehead and I’m left frozen. Not only by his crystal-clear blue eyes, but the electric current that rushes through my hand from his touch. I’m drawn in and I’m left flustered in his presence. He loomed over me, but his energy seemed harmless. His black hair shimmered with the sunlight, but his eyes were the most gorgeous element about him. And I feel like I’m drooling at the mouth.

He tried to smile, dabbed his forehead repeatedly and let out a groan, “Ouch...”

Even his slight smile was breathtaking. He wore a light shirt with jeans and carried a large backpack that laid near his feet on the ground. I pondered where he was going and didn’t recognize him. He must not be from around here.

He gazed at me with confusion and I wondered if the bump had caused an injury. “I’m sorry, but what is your name?”

“Oh, my name is Cassie.” I replied and retreated my hand from his shoulder.

He looked at me closely, and it’s hard to read what he was thinking. He made me slightly nervous under his deep stare and my hands fiddled with response under the intense pressure. Until a gorgeous smile lit up his handsome features and made his eyes sparkle. “Cassie, I like that. I just came by to see if you had any floral arrangements, but now I can clearly see you aren’t open.”

I looked behind me to where he pointed at the door that hung open and displayed my work in progress. Gazing up at the pretty sign above my head of my flower shop and realizing it would appear open to people unfamiliar with our small town. “I take it you’re not from around here?”

“No, I’m not actually. I’m here for a short while to visit my parents who live close by.” He admitted as he pointed towards my shop and removed his hand from his head. “I thought I’d pick up something for them and you seem to be the only flower shop in town.”

His oceans of blue distract me and I couldn’t help but feel something undeniable towards him. A pull that draws me in and I couldn’t understand it. “Oh, yes, that is one of the many reasons I’m opening this place up soon. Just a few minor details and she will be ready to go.”

I smiled proudly, but giggled with embarrassment at the stupid door and held my hand against it. Looking from the ground to his head and seeing a red bump forming. “Um, get that checked or even some ice. Again, I’m very sorry about that.”

I spun around to retreat inside. Trying to hide my embarrassment, even though it seems far too late for that now and his voice fills the air. “You don’t want to know my name?”

My eyes narrowed, a smile played across my face, and I turned around slowly. “And why would I need to know your name?”

He stepped forward slightly with that enormous, beautiful smile that turned into a playful grin. “Because you might want to know it in case we go out sometime.”

His one foot played with the dirt sweetly and I could tell he was slightly nervous, but he held his ground. He sparked my interest, and I stepped towards him even more. “And what makes you think I’ll go out with you?”

We now stood in front of one another and the air sizzled between us. It’s an undeniable connection that neither one of us could ignore. His beautiful hues peered into me and the breath whooshed out of him. “Because I can’t take my eyes off of you, Cassie.”

I grinned like a teenage girl would at her high school crush and gazed down at my feet. I couldn’t get over his directness, but it attracts me to him. I have to know more as I look up into his intense gaze and he awaits my reply.

“Okay, I will bite. What’s your name, handsome?” I asked the question he awaited.

“My name is Matthew and I’m wondering if you would be free sometime this week?” Matthew asked as he smiled the most genuine smile and I just had to see where this could go.
