“I bet he didn’t,” Jesse snorted.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means I’m sure he was doing his very best to impress you,” Jesse said. “I mean, he’s not exactly human, but he’s got eyes, and he was totally checking you out.”
Chloe felt a rush of heat low in her stomach. “Really?” She was aware that she sounded far too eager. “I mean, I’m sure he wasn’t.”
“He was,” Jesse grunted. “Just don’t get too friendly with him, okay?”
“He’s a client,” Chloe said firmly. “I’d never do anything unprofessional. You know that.”

“See you then, Chlo.”
Chloe ended the call, pacing around her studio in her pyjamas. Sunset. How would she wait until sunset to find out what the hell was going on? She had always been able to throw herself into her work when she needed to distract herself from her personal life – or lack thereof – but something about the situation with Maxwell was different. She was pretty sure she wouldn’t be able to get her undead acquaintance – and the curse they shared – out of her head.
