“I should get to bed,” Chloe said, suppressing a yawn. “I was going to drive back tonight, but I’m kind of hoping you’ll let me stay.”
“Of course,” Maxwell said quickly. “Who’d be crazy enough to kick a beautiful woman out into the snow?”
“There’s no snow. If we’re lucky, we’ll get through this whole winter with no snow.”
“No snow,” Maxwell repeated. “I’ll have a word with Tilly, see if she can do anything about the weather.”
Chloe laughed and rose to her feet. “Are you coming?” she asked. “I know it’s early for you, but—”
“I’ll join you in just a minute,” Maxwell said. “Get the bed warm for me.”
“I’ll do my best,” Chloe said and stepped out of the room, completely naked and absolutely perfect. And utterly unattainable.
Maxwell didn’t know how long he sat there, looking into the fire, and thinking. But when he finally did make it to bed, Chloe was fast asleep. Still, not even the soft sound of her breathing was enough to help him rest. Not when his heart felt like it had been shattered.
