Maddox glanced around them. “You two seem to be on friendly terms. I wonder what his fiancée would say if she found out?”
Mila’s lips parted as she stopped moving. She stared up at him in shock.
“So, you don’t know,” he said. “I thought better of Jackson, but I guess he likes to have his fun too.”
Her eyes glistened in the light. After a breath, she reached up and slapped him across the face.
It felt like the whole restaurant paused while his skin stung. After staring him down for a tense moment, Mila ran from the dancefloor.
Maddox adjusted his jacket as everyone pretended like they hadn’t seen that. Though he caught Mila’s mother’s wide-eyed stare across the floor.
For some reason, that motivated him to run after Mila.
She stood outside and swiped tears from her face as he came over. This was not the kind of situation he was cut out for.
“I’ll take you back to the hotel,” he said flatly.
She didn’t respond. And she spent the whole drive back trying not to cry though she kept brushing tears away with her hands.
As soon as they pulled up to the hotel, she flung her door open and dashed inside without saying a word.
Maddox sighed. It wasn’t like him to be so petty. He wasn’t sure what possessed him to tell her about Jackson, but it was too late now.
Even stranger, he didn’t like how upset she was about Jackson. Though it made no difference to him whom she liked. Still, it bothered him that the news made her cry.
