Mila set her mug aside and rubbed her forehead. What was wrong with her mother? Mila was away from the center of the storm for reasons.
“I’ll take care of everything,” her mother assured her without waiting for an answer. “All you have to do is be visible. Maddox liked what he saw. And I’m sure that other woman doesn’t hold a candle to you. Just go and mingle and I’m sure he’ll come to you.”
Technically, that was extremely flattering coming from her mother. But Mila was horrified.
She chewed on her thumbnail. This was the last thing she wanted. What if someone recognized her from the event with Maddox and word got around that she worked for him?
When she returned to work a day later, she still didn’t know what to do about her mother’s wonderful plan. But then, Mila learned that Parker had been fired.
“Why?” Mila asked Maddox in his office. “He’s a hard worker. He does what you ask, and he never complains.”
“Are you in love with him or something?” Maddox looked up. “You should be happy. You’ve just been given a promotion because of him.”
“I don’t want it.” Mila folded her arms and jutted her chin out. Maybe this was the opportunity she’d been waiting for. “I quit.”
Maddox looked over at her incredulously. “You can’t quit just like that.”
“Watch me.” Mila marched toward the door.
“What about Jackson?” Maddox called out, but Mila ignored him and slammed the door. Anything would be better than this.
Anything.
