“If you take Mila’s side, you could hurt your rapport with Danny and his company and risk losing a valuable partnership. But if you don’t…” Nikki gazed off into the darkness.
“Mila could end up ruined.” He shut his eyes.
“Maybe it won’t come to that.” Nikki draped her arms over the fence. “Mila won’t fight them for power.”
“No. But I can’t say the same thing about her mother. I’d venture to say she might. If that’s the case, Mila will end up dragged into it anyway.” Mila’s mother could seem like a ditz, but it might be misleading. Maddox wasn’t sure what to think of her.
“You know you can count on Jalen and me one way or another.”
He nodded. “I know.” After a moment of silence, he said, “Go ahead and get it over with.”
“Get what over with?” Nikki side-eyed him.
“Your excitement. Just do what you have to do.” He waved a hand for her to get on with it.
After a second, Nikki let out a squeal and started shaking him again. This time, Maddox let it slide. But he hoped her excitement wasn’t for nothing.
