“We leave right after the shooting, so I have to put the bags in the car before we go,” he tells me, and I don’t know why I’m suddenly sad to go. I mean, I know why. Tonight when I go to bed it won’t be in his arms, but instead, I’ll be in my bed by myself. “We have that fundraiser tomorrow night,” he reminds me, and I nod my head. I am not sure I can say anything without my voice shaking. “Did you get a dress for the Grammys?”
“I did,” I tell him of the silver dress waiting for me at home along with the dress I’m wearing tomorrow night. I close the suitcase and zip it closed, and he grabs his clothes and brings them in his room to throw them in his own. I wheel my suitcase to the hallway. “I’m ready,” I tell him, and he comes out, and I just sigh.
“Are those the jeans I bought?” he asks me of the jeans I’m wearing. It seems that me in skirts that were tight and constricted my legs being open were not okay. So I came home to a box full of jeans. I mean, about thirty pair of jeans. I do a turn in them, showing him that the jeans are so tight you see my full ass. “Are you wearing a sweater with those?” he asks, and I just shake my head. “Okay, so I need to order you sweaters.” I grab his phone from him. “You can’t walk around like that.”
“What is wrong with these?” I ask him, and he puts his head back and groans.
“Baby, you see everything,” he says, and I just shrug.
“I could have worn my skirt, but you didn’t want me to,” I tell him and walk in front of him. I take a last look around and then walk out with him following. I close the door behind him, and he makes his way to the truck and puts our things in the back.
“One scene today, right?” I ask him, getting in, and he just answers with a nod.
When we walk into the stage, everyone is in a bright mood, knowing that they will be bringing the set back home to L.A.. “Finally done with this town,” Mandy says while she puts on his makeup. “It’s barbaric here. No Uber, no cabs.” She shakes her head. “I need pollution in my life.”
“I love it here,” Carter says. When Mandy stops working on his face, he opens one eye. “What?”
“No hustle and bustle,” she says. “No clubs or bars.” She continues, then leans in and whispers, “No pussy.” He shakes his head. “I have to say you cost me a hundred bucks.”
“Why’s that?” he asks, and I look up from my phone to listen.
“You’ve been here for two weeks, and you haven’t had sex with one person,” she says. “Not one.” And my stomach drops, just thinking about it.
“I’m a changed man,” he says. “Reformed.”
Mandy throws her head back and laughs. “A leopard doesn’t change his spots,” she says and continues to work on him.
“Maybe I’m done with the meaningless sex,” he tells her. “Maybe I’m done with the bullshit of people only wanting to be with me because of who I am.” Mandy looks at me, and I just shrug at her. “People can change,” he says, and Mandy just drops the subject. I don’t let it get to me, but somehow, it does. I follow him to stage three, and I do my posts on Facebook, Twitter, and of course, my favorite Instagram. This time, I snap a shot of the stage with the caption.
“Last shot in Montana. Big Sky Country . . . you were beautiful.”
I then go and accept Carter’s follow request. My heart’s a little heavy knowing that things are going to change when we leave, but I don’t dwell on it. I post a picture of Ivan and Carter looking at a shot on camera. We say goodbye to everyone and walk out right when the sun is high in the sky. “It’s going to be a good day,” he says, getting in the car. We make our way back to the airstrip. Once there, he hands the keys to the guy who loads our bags on the plane. He waits for me to walk in front of him. “I want those jeans when you’re done with them,” he tells me when I sit down in front of him with the table between us.
“Why?” I ask him, buckling my seat belt.
“So I can burn them,” he says, glaring at me, and I just throw back my head and laugh.
“Nope, you bought them,” I remind him and then stop when the girl comes over and smiles at us.
“Welcome aboard,” she says and then her smile goes a little bit bigger when she looks at Carter. “My name is Keira, and I’ll be here to assist you with anything you need.” I roll my eyes when she emphasizes the word anything.
