Chapter Thirteen
Aisha was tugged along by Emma. She kept looking back and wanted to run back to Drake.
“Here we are,” Emma said.
Aisha turned to Devon when he said her name.
“Honey, if at any time you need to go back to him, just tell me, and I’ll take you back.”
She exhaled and nodded. “All right.”
“Come over here, Aisha.”
There was a small room in Devon’s office. There was no wall to keep him from seeing them and no door for them to get out of without crossing in front of his desk.
“I’ve got coloring books. You can practice writing English or watch a movie. Whatever you want.”
“I’d like to watch a movie, please. I’m learning a lot of slang from the television.”
Emma grinned. “We can only watch PG movies, so there’s not a lot of that in them.”
They picked out a movie and sat on the small, very comfortable sofa. Aisha had no idea how much time passed, and she started to get sleepy.
“Here’s a blanket. The sofa’s long enough for us both to lie down if we bend our legs.”
“I’d like that.”
A sound above her woke her up. The first thing she saw was a man she didn’t know leaning over her. She jerked away from him and looked over to the desk. Her heartbeat spiked in her chest when she saw Devon was gone.
Emma had woken up, and her eyes were wide with alarm. “Mister, who are you?”
The man chuckled. “A colleague. What are you two beautiful, sexy women doing here?”
“Mister, my daddy won’t like it if you keep talking to us,” Emma said and pulled Aisha to sit next to her.
The man’s eyebrows rose. “Daddy? There’s no way Mr. Fowler has a daughter your age. So who’s your daddy?”
“You’ll have to talk to Devon about it.”
“Why can’t I sit beside you both while I wait?” The man started to walk around the sofa to sit next to them.
Devon walked in. “What the fuck are you doing, Mathews?” He grabbed the guy’s arm and yanked him out of the room.
Aisha heard their angry voices and wanted to know what was said.
“What in the hell were you doing?”
“I was just talking to them. Jesus, it’s no big deal,” Mathews said.
“I saw their faces. They were both scared.”
“They’re fine. I wasn’t saying anything suggestive to them, for fuck’s sake.”
“I don’t give a fuck what you were saying. You just talking to them was enough. When you’re in this building, you stay away from the women you see here. Besides some of the secretaries, they all belong to someone.”
Mathews snorted. “Belong? That’s a weird way to say it.”
“Not at all.”
“That chick was talking about a daddy. You guys aren’t into some weird shit, are you?”
“Nothing we do is your business or up for discussion. If you want to continue to work with us, you do what I say.”
“Fuck. Fine, whatever,” Mathews said and walked off.
Devon came back right away. “Did he scare you, girls?”
Emma nodded. “He was really creepy.”
Devon sat on the end of the sofa. “I’m sorry. I just had to drop off a file to a guy two offices away.”
“It’s not your fault, Daddy. We’re fine.”
Devon looked at Aisha. “How are you doing?”
