“No clue. Clearly, the gossip guild got that one way wrong.” He chuckled, purposely trying to put his brother at ease. Before the moment grew somber, Dallas tossed out the question still circling his brain. “So, where exactly did you go to look for the shooter?”
“Nowhere,” Austin replied. Unlatching the gate, he stepped in alongside the horse, keeping only his back visible. “By the time I pulled onto the road, they…they stopped.”
Dallas knew two things… Austin was a terrible liar, and he was most definitely lying his ass off at the moment. Instead of calling him out and causing an argument that would only be settled in a fistfight, Dallas simply grunted.
“You staying out here with her all night?” he asked nodding toward the mare.
“Haven’t decided yet.”
“Need anything from the house?”
“Nope,” Austin replied, keeping his head down and focusing on his horse.
Can’t even look me in the eye, can you bro? That’s okay, I’ll figure out what you’re hiding, even if I have to keep watch on you twenty-four seven.
“In that case, I think I’ll go play some video games before I crash.”
“Have fun.”
Oh, I will, but not playing video games. I’m gonna have a blast unlocking whatever secret you’re hiding.
