“Yeah,” I said slowly, with my best angelic smile.

“Well, okay. Okay,” she said, backing up toward her office like she might catch something from me.

The next day, Cato happened by my desk.

“Guess the cat’s out of the bag,” he said, smiling.

“What makes you say that?” I asked.

“Looks like it got to the senior partners that you and I are seeing each other. They told me to either end it, or I could leave the firm.”

Fuckers.

“So what did you tell them?” I asked.

“That I’d leave the firm, of course,” he said.

Good grief, he looked different already. Like he’d hoisted a huge weight from his shoulders. Like he was ten years younger. And like he was a shit-ton happier.

“Um, what? You’re leaving the firm?”

“Yes, I am.”

Turned out Cato had been talking to Von about starting a foundation to fund no-kill animal shelters. When they told me about their plan, my heart swelled with pride.

“So, here’s the scoop. I’ll be the executive director of the organization,” Anson said.

“And we’ll run it out of my vet office,” Von added.

“But we need help,” Cato said.

“We need you.”

So, I gave my notice at the firm to work with the guys. Anson was quitting his gig to handle the foundation’s finances, and Brade was working with his agent to secure a bunch of fundraising concerts that would benefit the organization.

We were just one happy family, thanks in part to Eva.

Who, by the way, had nearly had a heart attack when I told her I was leaving. She really surprised me by taking me to lunch at one of the nicest restaurants in New York City. She’d toasted me with tears in her eyes, leaving me wondering why she’d hidden her nice side with the bitchy façade she was so famous for.

And now I was going to be related to her. Sort of, anyway, through Anson.

“C’mon, guys, we’re going to be late.”

My jaw just about hit the floor when Cato, Von, and Anson entered our hotel suite’s living room, all in elegant black tie.

Holy lord, where did men like this come from?

“Look at you,” Von growled.

I did a little pirouette for the guys, spinning in my slinky red evening dress that hugged every inch of me to the knees, where it flared out, fishtail-style.

“Daaaamn, baby,” Cato said after whistling softly.

Two pair of lips met either side of my neck, but I squirmed away from their temptation just as a hand slithered over my silk-covered ass and pinched me.
