“No.”

“Well, there you go. Let me be your fairy bakemother.”

Silence greeted her again. He was probably rethinking ever calling her. Reba wasn’t offended. The entire situation was amusing.

“Fine. It’s a deal. We can hash everything out in detail. Later. Perhaps this weekend?”

“Awesome! But this weekend is a no-go. I’ll be frolicking at the beach with some girlfriends.”

She’d been looking forward to this little staycation beach house getaway. She had earned that. She and Cherisse had been going non-stop, making those money moves. Laying out on the beach in a brightly coloured bikini, sipping on some homemade cocktails, and catching up with friends was some much-needed therapy.

The weather forecast called for sun, so Reba was hoping that would hold true. It was never a guarantee around this rainy season.

She could discuss everything with Devon after that. Like why was he taking part in a bake-off in the first place? It sounded really out there for him. From all she gathered about Devon during their time at the wedding, nothing seemed to bother the man, but the desperation in his voice had been too clear. Was he doing this to impress someone? A woman? Doing something showy like this didn’t seem like his thing, but Reba had seen some guys do some questionable stuff to show off for someone they were interested in.

Considering how much he gave off the “this is a no-fun zone” vibe, she would surely need to milk her weekend getaway before having to deal with him.

“Frolicking. On the beach.” He repeated her words like they made no sense.

Reba rolled her eyes. “Yes. The beach. You know, where people go to relax? Have fun. Chill out. You might want to try it sometime.”

“Too busy.”

“Well, if you want me to help you with this, you’ll need to make some time. I’ll leave you to figure out your schedule. I gotta go. You have my number, so send me the details.”

She ended the call. No matter how curious she was about all this, she had to refocus on her job.

Devon King could wait.
