That one struck a nerve. She turned away to look out the window. “Just drive.”
He didn’t bother her again until they got to his house. She jumped out of the car, ready to head over to hers, but she wasn’t running away that easily.
“We’re supposed to bake today. We have two weekends left. Don’t tell me you’re about to leave me hanging?”
“I’m in no mood for this.”
“Let me make you one of my hangover cures.”
“Have you ever been hungover in your life? I wouldn’t think you’d allow yourself to lose control like that.”
He didn’t make it a habit. The one time he had gotten so drunk, the experience had made him never want to lose control like that ever again. Hell, it had definitely been what had pushed him to grab onto control the way he did. He brushed a wayward strand of her hair away from her face, letting his finger trace over her ear as he tucked it behind. He didn’t smile at the way she bit her lip, but he wanted to. Badly. Reba might be the master at flirting, but Devon had his ways. He was just less in your face about it.
“The one time was enough,” he admitted. “But as you know very well, certain factors do contribute to me having a slippery hold on control sometimes. Please. Let me take care of you. You can even nap for a bit while I get the baking stuff organised. I have an idea, but I’ll need to go to the grocery for some food colouring.”
“I don’t… You just want to watch me sleep again, you weirdo.”
The laughter burst out of him unexpectedly. “You do look like an angel when you’re sleeping. It’s hard not to look at you. The difference is startling.”
“I’m no angel,” she tossed out before walking up to his door. “Come on, then.”
He had won this round. She wasn’t getting into her car and driving away. Everyone liked to get on his ass for his rigorous plans, and while he was beginning to understand a little of why they went so hard at him over that, he wasn’t about to do a complete 180. He had also come to learn the damn tight feeling in his chest wasn’t some weird heartburn, but the realisation that he was maybe ready to allow a little chaos into his life if she would have him.
