“Yes, fine. I did.”
“So why you didn’t say so?”
“Um…”
Trina’s snort was so loud in her ear. “You had sex,” she stated. “You are so predictable.”
“What? Me? You take that back. I’m not predictable.” That was plain ass rude. Trina knew her better than that.
“Not in the usual way folks think someone could be. But when you want to avoid something, you find all how to distract. Turn up the sexy. In my case, you plain avoided me. In Devon’s case, he wants something more, doesn’t he? After all the sexy fun, now you’re calling me in a panic.”
“I do not panic. I called to confirm I won.”
“Yeah, sure. You can’t lie to me, missy. I’m right about him, aren’t I?”
Reba hated when Trina was right about anything. She gloated so annoyingly. “Okay, fine, yes, he said some wacky things that cannot be true.”
“How you know?”
“Because…”
Trina sucked her teeth. “You don’t even have a legit reason. He strikes me as the type to not play around. So if he said something, he meant it. Does he seem duplicitous to you? Plus, he not like them little boys you like to play around with then get vex when they show you exactly who you thought they were.”
“Wait, what the hell? That’s not…”
“Hold on, not done,” Trina interrupted. “You go for the exact opposite of the men your parents suggest. A bunch of fuck boys, which okay, have your fun, but when they show you who they are, of course, it still hurts. I get that, but your parents might be onto something. You need someone to balance off your chaos, not accelerate that shit.”
“You think I need to be less of me?” Well, damn. If her best friend even thought that way…
“Oh no, that’s not what I’m saying at all. I love your chaotic fun-shine ass. You complete me and all that, but…”
“But?” Reba prompted.
“You need someone with a little more maturity to keep you grounded. And you can help him add that spice to his life. Sounds like a win-win to me.”
“Do you really think a man like that won’t get tired of me after the novelty wears off?” Why was she even asking this? She wasn’t considering her and Devon as a thing. That would be way too farfetched, right?
“Give him a chance and find out. Aren’t you Ms. Risk-Taker?”
Sure, she thrived on living her life that way, yet this felt too risky. She really wanted that nap now. “I need to go sleep off this shit.”
“Yeah, go do that. We’ll talk later.”
She was sure they would. Trina was going to tell Ayo all about this, no doubt. Then she’d have both of them breathing down her neck about what she wanted to do.
Not her problem right now because sleep was calling. With a head full of thoughts and a stomach taken over by nerves, she curled up on Devon’s sheets and willed sleep to come.
