Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 98

I reached across the console and pressed my hand to his thigh. “And you don’t know who it is?”

“Not yet, but we have leads we’re working on.”

My hand trembled. I’d seen the bruises on him, and I’d known his last assignment hadn’t gone as planned, but he hadn’t volunteered details, and I’d been too scared to ask. It’d been so easy to pretend none of this had ever happened while we were away. Now hearing him confirm he could have been killed was hard to swallow.

“Wait a minute. Is this the real reason you suggested we take some time off over the weekend?”

“Yes.” He squeezed my hand. “I wanted to get out of the city for a while in case I was followed, and I needed to take you out of the picture until I figured out what we knew and how to handle the situation.”

So the good time we’d just had was just another business ploy. He hadn’t planned our vacation because he wanted to spend it with me.

“You’re awfully quiet. What’s going through your mind?”

“Nothing.”

“Come on, Kit-Kat. Talk to me.”

“I guess I’m a little hurt. You only asked me to go to Florida with you because of what happened and not because you wanted to be with me.”

“I admit that was the primary reason, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy our time together. We plan to go back, and that has nothing to do with the current threat.”

I deflated and laced my fingers through his. “You’re right. I just don’t want to pull information out of you. I want you to talk to me about everything.”

“Some things will take time.”

“I know.”

He squeezed my hand and released it. “I was thinking. Why don’t you grab some stuff at your place and come back to mine?”

“Are you sure? I can be a bit of a slob.”

He chuckled. “I noticed, but that doesn’t scare me away. My housekeeper will be back in a few days.”

I groaned. “Don’t encourage me. I might like it too much. Next thing you know, I’ll never leave.”

“Then don’t.”

I sucked in a deep breath. “You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“But we’re still learning about each other.”

“And we can’t do that from my house? In fact, we’d learn more by living with each other, so this sounds perfect.”

I squirmed, digging my fingers into my palms. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Sully, but maybe not all the time. I can spend most of the time with you, but still keep my house for when we want some space.”

“If that’s what you want.”

It wasn’t, really. I wanted to pack all my shit and move into his bedroom at once, but this was all going scary fast. What if I threw my all into this and he’d get tired of me as soon as I moved in?

On the way to my place, he stopped at a drive-through and picked up some takeout. He waved me off from helping get Cinnamon and her stuff in, so I walked into the kitchen with the bags. By the time he entered, I had the food spread out on the table.

He kissed the side of my neck. “I’ll pour Cin some of that cat milk as a treat, then join you.”

“That looks good,” I said when he poured the milk into the bowl.

Sully laughed and pointed at the table. “Easy, Kitty. That’s your food right there.”
