Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 111

The waiter returned with our crab-stuffed mushrooms and the wine. He poured us both a glass, then left the bottle in the ice bucket next to our table.

“You know, if this is what spending ten grand in a day gets me, I need to do it more often.” Kit bit into one of the round balls and moaned with his eyes closed. A slow heat built inside me as I watched him.

“If you continue moaning like that, we won’t make it home before I’m buried inside you.”

His eyes flew open. “Promises, promises. If you want, I can suck you off in the bathroom?”

“I don’t want to come down your throat.” I took a sip of my wine. “And I’m going to need more privacy after being unable to touch you the last few days with you giving me the cold shoulder.”

He groaned. “It was torture for me too. I almost caved in last night. I swear I told myself there was nothing wrong with a quick fuck, then back to not talking to you.”

I laughed at the way he winked at me. “Tell yourself that if it makes you feel better.”

Dinner with Kit was great. He might not have considered himself book smart, but he was witty—his double entendres never failed to throw me off my game. His whole body was animated when he told a story, and when he giggled, he actually caused a server to trip over his own feet and go down. Luckily, the tray he carried had been empty.

When we finished eating, we lingered for a nightcap, and Kit told me about his childhood. I was relieved that, mostly, he’d had a decent childhood. It wasn’t until his teens that his parents started having marital issues, and his mother had an affair with someone else.

“Dad was upset about it and vowed he was going to kill her, but she didn’t take it seriously. I’m not even sure if he believed it himself when he said it.”

“I’m sorry you lost her that way.”

“But I still have my memories.” He put his glass on the table. “What about you? What’s your family like?”

I dabbed at the corner of my mouth with the napkin and placed it on the table. “My family’s pretty close, but for their safety and protection, we rarely keep in touch.”

I still had to think about my sister’s engagement party and whether or not I would attend. Just this once.

“That’s sad, but you have me now.”

I smiled at him. “Yes, I do.”

He pushed back his chair and got to his feet with a hand outstretched. “Come on, dance with me.”

There was an open space for dancing to the music of the live pianist.

“Please.”

I got to my feet and took Kit’s hand. “I warn you that I’m not the world’s best dancer.”

“I don’t care. It’s an excuse to get your arms around me.”
