Why hadn’t Javier given me a flashlight?
Slowly, my eyes adjusted enough to the dark for me to go forward. I walked deeper into the tunnel-like structure. Did Sully have one of these escape routes at his own house? If he did, he hadn’t mentioned it. This one was sheer genius. I had no idea where I would end up, but anywhere was better than being back in that bedroom.
My heart clenched. Javier. Why had he chosen to stay behind instead of leaving with me? Why hadn’t he just thrown me to the piranhas?
It was slow going in the dark. I so didn’t want to break my legs. Not when I was this close to safety. Finally, an iron door loomed ahead of me.
Freedom.
I punched in the code and the door swung open. Two figures loomed on the other side, startling me back. My heart thudded inside my chest.
They had found me.
