“Good,” she says, snuggling against me. “Happy to be of service.”
“Come to dinner with me at my mother’s tonight,” I blurt without thinking.
I already had plans to go hang out with Mom tonight, and I’d told Sophie earlier I’d be unavailable. But all the turmoil in my brain right now is driving me crazy, and I wasn’t lying––everything is better when she’s near.
Plus, I want my mom to meet her.
Sophie lifts her head to look at me, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Are you sure? It’s a bit early for that, isn’t it?”
“Dinner’s at seven,” I say. “That’s not too early.”
She elbows me in the gut, hard, saying, “You know what I meant.”
“It doesn’t have to mean anything, Sophie. My mom is awesome, and I’m sure you two will love each other. It’s just dinner. Nothing serious. I promise.”
She inhales deeply and nods. “Okay. If you’re sure, I’d love to come with you.”
“Great. We can leave right after work.”
She looks down at her outfit, and I press a finger beneath her chin to lift her face to mine.
“Have I told you how beautiful you look today?” I ask, pressing my lips to hers softly.
She leans into the kiss for a moment, then breaks it off abruptly. “Nope.”
She pushes herself off my lap and evades my attempts to pull her back down. Straightening her clothes and patting her hair, she nods.
“I have a lot of work to catch up on after being gone yesterday, then half of this morning. I have no time to play with you, Mr. Hart.”
“You’re no fun,” I say with an exaggerated frown.
“Oh, yes I am, and you know it,” she says, waggling her eyebrows before turning to sashay out of my office, her hips swinging suggestively.
I shake my head and laugh as the door closes behind her. No way were Scotty and Harrison right.
Sophie Jameson is the real deal, and I’m already in over my head.
Wayover my head.
