The Baby Contract - Page 73

“You paid for so much during our friendship. Let me do this now that I can.”

I put the credit card Bran had given me when he’d set up the bank account where he put my monthly allowance. God, I was like a kept woman except he wasn’t sleeping with me anymore. And he didn’t care about anything but the baby.

“Well, okay.” Harper reached over and gave me a side hug. “I’m so happy that someone has finally learned what a great person you are. And I don’t mean Dax. I mean that eccentric boss.”

I nodded even though on the inside I was a hot mess of emotion.

I paid for our meals then we parted ways. I walked to my car, seeing Dax waiting next to it.

“She’s got eyes like a hawk,” he said.

“Or maybe you’re not as good as you think you are.”

He arched a brow. “You didn’t notice me following you.”

I hadn’t, but because I didn’t like how cocky he was, I said, “I’m spending time with Bran. Do you really think I didn’t know he was having me followed?”

He shrugged.

“She knows Bran too and is hypersensitive about being followed by his goons.”

He laughed. “I’ve gone from boyfriend to goon.” He opened the door for me. “I’ll follow you back.”

He seemed to take it all in good nature.

I drove home with Dax following me. I expected him to pull off when I drove through Bran’s gate, but he followed me in.

When I got out of my car, he walked up to me. “Listen, I was thinking that the boyfriend cover is a good one. I know Mr. Erickson would like me to be closer to you physically when you’re out. That would give me an excuse to be seen around you.”

“I don’t want you hovering.”

“I don’t have to. But if I’m seen or if I feel I need to move closer, it’s a good reason.”

I nodded. He was right. I didn’t like it and yet I realized the cover could also give me an excuse when my pregnancy showed. It didn’t solve how I’d explain not raising the child, but one step at a time, right?

He walked me to the door. I opened it and stepped into the foyer.

“Okay.” I gave him a pat on the chest and laughed at how hard it was. “I’ve always wanted a big strapping, kickass boyfriend."

Dax laughed. "At your service."

“What the fuck?”

My head swiveled to see Bran, his lethal gaze on me and Dax.
