Chapter Fifteen

Later the next morning, after a workout, Jenna and Trey walked into the condo.

“Kyla,” Jenna yelled.

She looked up at Trey when she didn’t hear anything. “I thought you said she was coming home this morning.”

“She was. Travis texted me and told me she dropped off.”

A piece of paper stopped Jenna as she walked toward Kyla’s bedroom.

Her hand went to her mouth as she read, and then tears filled her eyes. Oh, God.

“What is it, pet?” Trey gently took the paper from her and read the note.

Dear Trey and Jenna,

I’m sorry I didn’t stay to say goodbye, but I was afraid you’d feel obligated to try to keep me here. You guys need your space, and you can’t have that with me living here. Trey, I know you were worried about Billy using me against Jenna, so I am moving as far away as I can.

I want you both to be happy for me. I’m finally going to find my place in the world, and I’m excited about it.

I also want to wish you both the very best. I think you guys are wonderful together. Please tell our new friends that I will miss them, and I’ll get in touch when I find a place.

Would you please not come for me? It’s best this way. I’m tired of being in the way, and you’ve got to feel that way, too.

Take care and be safe.

Love, Kyla

“Goddammit,” Trey cursed.

“She left because of me.” Jenna buried her head against Trey’s chest as the tears slid down her face.

“No, pet. I think it was a lot of things. I feel responsible, too. I’m going to call some people. Go on and shower and get dressed. We’ll find her. Don’t worry.”

She walked off. What kind of friend was she? Why hadn’t she seen how unhappy Kyla had been? God, she would do anything to get her friend back. The thought of her out on her own scared Jenna.

She jumped into the shower and washed off quickly. When Trey walked in, she was just pulling on a pair of jeans.

“We’re going to Rylan’s. A bunch of people will meet us there.”

“Good.”

Trey undressed and stepped into the shower. If it had been any other time, she would have stripped and followed him, but her mind was on finding Kyla.

An hour later, Jenna stood around with a group of people she’d come to care about, and she was amazed at how many seemed as concerned about Kyla as she did.

Larkin stood close to her with an arm around her waist for support as the men sent out men to look all over the city.

She saw Duncan come in and head to the group of men.

“What’s going on?” Duncan asked.

“Kyla’s gone,” Trey said.

“How do you know she’s not coming back?”

Trey handed him the note Kyla left. “She’s gone, and I feel responsible.”
