“Not right now. I want to make sure Billy isn’t a threat.”
“But he never was to me. He always wanted Jenna.”
Trey nodded. “Yeah, but he might use you to get to her.”
She tried to inhale through the pain. Of course, he was worried about Jenna. He was probably already in love with her. They didn’t care about her. She was a fool to think anyone but Jenna cared what happened to her, and it looked like that might be taken away when she and Trey got together.
“Why do you look so sad, honey?” Trey asked.
“I just never thought of that, and I would never want anything to happen to her.”
“We know that.”
She stood, grabbed a few plates, and walked to the sink. She half-listened to them talking behind her as she did the dishes.
When she was done, she turned to them. “I’m going to read for a while before bedtime.”
“Do you still have a headache?” he asked.
“A small one.”
“If you need me, just yell, okay?”
She nodded and hugged Jenna, whispering in her ear to be nice.
Later that night, she lay in bed and looked up at the ceiling. Each day that went by made her feel less connected and more in limbo, and she wanted it to stop. She needed to figure out what she wanted to do and just do it.
She didn’t have anyone to tell her she couldn’t or anyone who cared enough to stop her. It came down to being alone, something she knew would always happen. She just didn’t like how much it hurt to think about.
