“I’ll send a note to your office about the time and address.”
“That sounds fine.” He turned to Amber. “I will see you Friday.”
“Okay.”
He turned and walked off. A sharp pain in the back of her arm made her gasp and jerk toward her mother, and the look of disgust on her face shocked Amber.
“If you think for one second you’ll be attending the party, you’re more ignorant than I thought.”
“But you said…” Amber said.
“I would have said anything to get him there. He’ll take one look at Bianca and want her. I think he and your sister would make a handsome couple, and it would be the marriage of the year if I get what I want.”
“You don’t know if Bianca will even like him.”
Her mother laughed. “You’re joking. The man is beyond handsome and richer than most of the people in town. If I can make it happen, this would put us at the top of society, and no one would ever be able to look down their noses at us again.”
“Who looks down on you now?”
“You’d be surprised. There are so many bitches in this town. It’s pathetic, and it’s because many of them are jealous of us.”
Amber had never seen that type of behavior from the people in town, but she wasn’t allowed out all that much, and now she was glad because it would hurt her feelings to be treated badly. She got enough of that at her home.
