Flipp
The Seer held out her wrinkled hand and rasped, “Give me your hand, child.”
I placed my hand in hers, and it felt like aged linen; scratchy and much like sandpaper. I had a strong urge to pull away from her, but I was worried what would happen if she was offended. With my hand in hers, she started to draw circles on my palm with the middle finger of her other hand. She was bent forward, as if looking down at my hand. I was only guessing, as I still couldn’t see her face. Did she really have three eyes, or was one metaphorical?
I watched, mesmerized by the motion of her finger on my palm. Azil was practically on the edge of his seat, as if I was going to suddenly turn into Lilith right before his eyes. Xagon was watching the finger, zero emotion on his face.
“There is something inside of you, something that you have been searching for.”
I was holding my breath. What was inside of me? Was it Lilith?
“What does that mean?” Azil barked.
“Azil! Let her finish,” Xagon said.
The Seer was silent for a long time. So long that I started to wonder if that was the extent of my prophecy. Maybe that would have been for the best, as I wasn’t sure what my future would hold if she told me I was the Demon Queen.
The Seer world functioned in prophetic ways, as they were able to see into the realm of the spirit world. They were able to “see” things through a third eye that most others were unable to see. They were considered to be wise creatures, as their visions allowed them to see into the future. Their role as a Seer was to provide direction, guidance, and insight into lost or hidden elements of your life. People went to these creatures to understand the directions in their life. I had never been to one because my past had already been nightmarish. I didn’t want to find out that my future was no better. I just wanted to live my life and have something better.
“You will, my dear.”
I looked up at her with surprise. Did she read my thoughts? Was that possible for a Seer?
Finally, she spoke again. “You will have to look within yourself, child, to find your true meaning. You are much stronger than you realize.”
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
“You are strong enough to save those that have been waiting for you to save them.”
“Who am I supposed to be saving?”
There was a crash outside and I jumped in my seat. I tried to ignore it and I repeated myself. “Who am I supposed to be saving?” I didn’t know of anyone that would depend on me to save them, unless she was simply talking about getting Jesye out of the cage. Was that really the destiny that she was giving me?
“The world around you is very dark, you must make it light again.”
“This is ridiculous,” muttered Azil.
“How am I supposed to save these people? Can’t you give me any more information?”
I was suddenly obsessed with finding out who I was supposed to save, as I didn’t want to fail at it. I had shed so much blood in my young life, it would be refreshing to be the one that saved someone for once.
There was yelling going on outside, so Xagon got up from the table and left the hut. I looked over at Azil. “Are we in danger?”
He was staring intently at the Seer, ignoring me.
“Tell me right now, Seer. Is she Lilith?”
“Azil! Stop it! I’m not her!”
He looked at me, his eyes burning into me. “I have no idea who or what you are.”
His words cut into me, and for the first time since I boarded the ship, I had serious worries about my safety.
Xagon stepped back inside the hut. “We have to go, we’re under attack.”
“Poseidon!” Azil said, and he slammed his fist on the table. I jumped, but the Seer didn’t move. I looked at her, and tried to see her face. I wanted to know what emotion laid on her face at that moment.
“Is she Lilith?!” Azil screamed at the Seer. He was now standing up at the table, leaning into her, screaming at her.
