“I know exactly what you meant. But if you want my mom’s wedding ring, I’ll be coming along. I’m not missing my only child’s wedding,” she says as she turns to head to her room to prepare to crash my wedding.

“I wouldn’t really call it a wedding,” I call out after her.

“Hush it, child,” she replies and continues down the hallway.

Hannah and I exchange shocked glances. “Looks like we’re going on a family road trip.”

As it would turn out, it’s a good thing my mom and dad decided to crash our trip. They were essential in convincing dad’s friend to come along extremely last minute to officiate. There was also bribery involving a lakeside cabin, but that’s neither here nor there. John and Christie are happily riding with my parents in their car a few miles behind us. And since my parents are coming, Hannah is now on the phone with her parents, explaining the situation.

I don’t know what her mom is saying on the other end of the line, but judging by the raised voices, it’s not great news. Hannah isn’t looking too worried, but she’s probably used to her own family’s brand of crazy.

“Mom, please don’t cry,” she says into her phone as I speed down the highway. “You’re going to crash the RV. I think you should let Dad drive for a little while.”

“Is she angry?” I ask in a half-whisper. She shakes her head but doesn’t give me more information than that. What am I in for when I see her parents? Is her dad going to wallop me across the head? Is her mom going to freeze me out the way so many Southern women know how to do with expert precision? I’ll tell you right now, if she utters the words bless your heart, I will shrivel up and die on the spot.

After several more minutes, Hannah ends the call and says, “My parents are going to meet us there. They weren’t too far, so Mom insisted.” Looks like this will be a family affair after all.
