I was still nervous when I served our meal, hoping this internet recipe wasn’t a complete disaster. “Hope it’s good, it’s a new recipe.” I set Charlie’s plate in front of him and sat. “It’s supposed to taste similar to Olive Garden’s chicken fettuccine.” It was low on carbs and much healthier, but I wasn’t going to spill those beans. I just hoped he enjoyed it.

I learned quickly that the slight tremors in his hands meant I needed to cut his food up into smaller pieces, but the look on his face when he finally took his first bite was worth it. “This is delicious. Much better than the food Sterling normally has delivered.”

I beamed at the compliment, then ruined our moment by sliding his medicine over with a tight-lipped smile. “Sorry, it’s horse pill time. Do you normally eat alone or does he make it home most nights?”

“He tries. But no, he isn’t here most nights.” He sighed, popping the pills into his mouth and taking a long drink of water to wash them down. “Better you than me with the-the texting.”

The reminder had me grabbing my phone to send my emojis to Sterling and then setting it back down. “Well, now we’ll be each other’s dinner dates.”

“Why do you think I hired you?” he asked, laughing quietly. “Gets lonely around here for an old man.”

“Hey, I’d hang out with you for free,” I grinned, and even this soon I knew I meant it. I’d also need a job and a place to live if that were the case though, so for now, this would have to do. “Eat up, Charlie. It’s almost time for Family Feud.”
