Finally, he switched his gaze to her, and she saw something in his eyes. Something expansive and infinite and warm. Something which reminded her of the way he’d played the silly game with his daughter because he’d known Wren would like it. Something which reminded her of the way he’d made her feel with his kisses.

“I love Wren,” she confessed. “I want her to have the best things in life, because she’s the most special bairn.” She swallowed, and decided it was time to confess the truth. “And I love ye, Pherson Ross.”

He blinked, and that something in his eyes changed, hooded, became somehow less. As if he were hiding part of himself. As if he were uncertain.

And she cursed herself for daring to mention her feelings.

But then he sighed, and his hold on her changed, and she saw one corner of his lips twitch.

In surrender.

When his lips claimed hers, she still wasn’t certain of his reaction, but she was rejoicing anyhow. That part of her which was always watching, analyzing, wondered what she’d said to convince him to kiss her…

But the other part of her reminded her this was only her second kiss, and really, she should just shut up and enjoy herself.

So she did.
