“I know. But without a letter, I would have no evidence. And he knows I could not give testimony in court. No magistrate would take me seriously, not against him. And he might be more squeamish about killing a woman.” She paused. “I hope.”
“Perhaps you could hide and wait for the others.”
“Perhaps. But he won’t be squeamish about killing Conall, I don’t think.”
“Be careful.” Priya hugged her again. “This is madness,” she added before rushing from the room.
“He’s a snake,” John said, trying hard to stand. Blood dripped onto the carpet. “I can’t let you go alone.”
“You have to.” She tried to smile but her face felt stiff with fear. “You’re still bleeding and wobbly as boiled pudding.”
“Take this then,” he said gruffly, sitting back down hard and pulling a knife from his boot. “Stab him hard if he comes after you.”
“I intend to.”
