She also brought him a pillow and what was left of the mint tea from the kettle before shutting herself up in her narrow bedroom. It would have shocked the gossips of the ton to know she was sleeping under the same roof as a single man. Even if he was below her rank and she was an aging penniless viscount’s daughter. But she trusted Wallace and the closed door of her bedroom would serve propriety well enough.

She finally lay down, her feet throbbing. Her lower back felt like the hollow cup of a spoon at the end of the hot metal of her spine.

She had been brave to stay. There were people who had needed her here.

And now she had to be brave and go.

If she could leave Dougal, whom she was in love with, she could leave her hateful, selfish uncle.
