“Do you have a daughter, Ales?”
His head shifts sharply in the bed as his eyes fly open.
“What?”
“I asked,…do you have a daughter?”
I’m not sure why I asked that question, but it burned in my belly and my mind. I couldn’t ignore it. The fear in his eyes lets me know that I’m on to something.
“You want to tell me how you got those burn scars on your back?”
I turn my back on him and stare at the sea beyond the balcony doors. Tears prick my eyes, and I close them tightly.
Not long after, I hear a soft, gentle snore. The moment I try to get up, he pulls me tight in his arms and says, “Where do you think you’re going?”
My heart thrums loudly in my chest.
“I gotta pee.”
Only then does he release me to do my business. I now know that he’s not a deep sleeper at all.
It’s then that another realization hits me. Alessandro never answered my other question. Is someone following me, and if so, why?
