LORCAN

There’s nothing on the floor when we walk into the main area of the warehouse, but at the far end, a few heavy-set-looking guys appear.

“Which one of you is Duke?”

I indicate that’s me, and they come over and hand me a fuckoff heavy bag. “Dante must trust you a hell of a lot,” he says. Both men wait, watching us count it. Once I’ve confirmed it’s all there, they walk off the way they came.

Jude shakes his head. “Why do I feel like we just got off too easy?”

“Because this is Viola we’re talking about,” I say to him. “When is anything ever easy when it comes to her? Come on.”

When we get outside, the Mustang is running, and Viola is behind the wheel. “Get in,” she says, revving the engine as she pulls the car up in front of us, so close she almost runs over my goddamn foot.

“What the fuck? You almost ran me over.”

“Just get in, hurry,” Viola snaps.

Jude takes the bag, and I jump in the front seat. We’re just belting up when there’s a shout from men from the warehouse that something is wrong. Viola peels away from the warehouse as fast as the deathtrap that is Dante’s car will let her. Behind us, the two guys are running after us, shouting. They can’t catch us, not on foot, but they look extremely fucked off.

“Viola, what did you do?” I ask her, holding on to the inside door card handle.

She says nothing, glancing in her mirror and then back to the road.

“Why were they chasing after us?” I ask, rephrasing just in case she didn’t understand my first fucking question.

I look over my shoulder at my sister. “What did you both do?”

“What makes you think we did something?” Sas hisses at me.

There’s muffled thumping from the trunk.

Jude starts chuckling. “I fucking knew it,” he says, shaking his head.

“Is there someone in the fucking trunk?” I look at Viola, who’s still pretending not to hear me. The banging continues, telling me that they do indeed have someone in the fucking trunk. “Is that why those men are chasing us?”

She finally deems me worthy of a glance. “Relax, I slashed their tires. No one is chasing us, and no one is coming after us.”

“Who is in the trunk?” I repeat.

“My old boss.”

“Why the fuck—” I shake my head.

“Because she’s trying to kill me, is that good enough reason?”

I stare at her for a good full minute. “Jesus fucking Christ, Viola,” I finally exclaim, turning back to the front, unable to say anything else. I have no words. No fucking words.

Viola doesn’t driveus back to Sacred Heart. Instead, she drives to the middle of nowhere and parks up. There’s nothing but dark wood all around and not a patch of light in sight, apart from the moon.

‘Where are we?” I say, completely done in.

“The cabin used to be here,” is all she says. As she gets out of the car and I sigh, tell Sas and Jude to stay put, and get out too. I walk to the trunk. Viola is already there, waiting. I place my hand on the trunk before she opens it. “Before you do this, what’s your plan?”

I know what she’s going to say. I’ve seen that look in her eyes before. I don’t know that I want to hear it, but I have to. What kind of pussy would I be if I didn’t.

This is what I signed up for. I knew she was fucking psycho.

“I’m going to interrogate her. She knows if Dante is a rat or not.”
