Perfect Illusion (Perfect 1) - Page 53

Jax’s mouth tightens. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I think I’ll just save the killing for the Killer, don’t you think? After all, that’s his specialty,” I tell him, leaving him to connect all the dots on his own.

“You wouldn’t.” His face is a violent outburst of temper when my words trigger his suspicion. His fingers curl into fists, knuckles going paper white. “Sienna, don’t you dare!”

“Just fucking watch me,” I hiss before striding away from him.

Once I manage to squeeze out of the main enclosure, I notice Kayden heading straight for me. His body shudders with relief as he approaches me.

“Where the hell did you go?” Kayden asks. “Brent and Evans were looking all over and they couldn’t find you.”

“I got held up.”

“By what?”

A slight pause. “By Jax.”

When he registers the name, his grey eyes infuse with rage, dark and wild and fierce.

“Where is the bastard?” He demands, his head already swiveling around, eyes scanning the sea of people in front of him. “Tell me.”

“Don’t.” I shake my head adamantly, not wanting his animosity toward Jax to lead him astray from our real goal.

“Tonight isn’t the night. Save it for the cage.” I step toward him, tilting his face towards me as I search for any sign of injury inflicted during the fight against Maddock. “Are you hurt from the fight?” I scan the whites around his eyes to make sure they aren’t bloodshot, then the rest of his face for any wounds that’ll require stitching. Much to my relief, he looks better than most fighters after their fight, save for the bruising on his legs and arms. I make a mental note to make sure he runs an ice bath when we get home to help with the soreness.

“No, I’m fine,” Kayden insists. “I’m worried about you.

Did Jax hurt you?”

“No, he didn’t. We just talked.”

He swallows hard, eyelids fluttering closed. I’m not sure if he’s relieved or angry.

“What did he say?”

“Doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that we win,” I tell him urgently. “He knows we’re working together now and that you’re a real threat. So he’s going to try to use your weaknesses against you. What we have to do is get ahead of them so we can get ahead of him,” I say sharply. “So what are they?”

Silence descends on us. He glances away briefly, avoiding my gaze. He looks almost sad.

Eventually, he sighs. Relenting.

“You.”

“What?”

His breathing is ragged and his voice is strangled when he whispers, so softly that nobody else but me can hear it,

“My weakness is you, Lucky.”

My heart inflates like a goddamned helium balloon.

“There you are. We’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

I hear Evans approach, pulling us both out of the trance.

Brent sticks beside Evans, body tensing and eyebrows dipping low with concern. “Knockouts are over. Let’s scram before the cops arrive.”

I nod silently. As the four of us join the line of people exiting the park, Kayden’s hand brushes against mine and I close my eyes briefly, remembering the words he just uttered to me. They circle my heart and fill it with warmth, and deep down I know that his feelings are not unrequited.

I think you’re my weakness, too, Kayden.
