Everything about this situation made things a thousand times more casual between them than he wanted. It was wholly unacceptable.

If there were another nanny available, he would trade this one back in a heartbeat.

But Marv Anyx told him this one was the best his company had to offer.

And when it came to his kids, Ra’as Drayven always gave them the best that money could buy.

The girl waited, as if she could sense the turmoil in him, and wanted to allow him time to calm down. He felt instantly seen and accepted by her.

And he didn’t like it one bit.

She gave him a self-conscious smile, as if in apology.

He felt an involuntary pang of sympathy, followed by a wave of suspicion.

Ra’as had been a widower long enough to see this act play out many times.

Ever since Myza died in battle, it seemed that every new application for employment, whether for his home or the firm, was some young and beautiful, off-planet female. Though some of them might have been legitimately seeking employment, he suspected the vast majority were credit-hungry schemers, looking to seduce a wealthy widower looking for a trophy wife.

He expected better from Marv’s nanny firm, and the girl had qualifications.

But she was still a little too pretty.

Either way, he still needed a nanny, and she wouldn’t get her hooks into him if he didn’t let her. She could smile at him with that sedative aura of peace radiating off her all day if she wanted. Ra’as wasn’t biting.

“Do you have any bags?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she said quickly. “They’re just in the trunk—”

“Good,” he said, in his coldest boss-voice. “Get them and come in.”

He turned on his heel and walked back up the porch stairs, leaving her to fend for herself, which he was certain she was perfectly capable of doing.
