Something about the walk to the nanny’s rooms reminded him of being a small boy called in front of the principal. His temper had gotten him into trouble in his school days, too. Ra’as was prone to tearing apart his own work when he wasn’t satisfied with it - something that broke the tender heart of his elderly art teacher, who treasured each of his painstakingly rendered drawings.

The second floor was silent. He imagined the kids had buried themselves in their books and holo-films to blot out the real world.

He could hardly blame them. He worked all the time, and the house felt empty without Myza.

Mimi was too little to remember her mother, but she seemed to have inherited the ability to sense the absence of the woman she had never really known.

He climbed the staircase to the third floor and paused a moment on the landing.

The space felt different with Emilia in it. He wasn’t sure if it was the light scent of her shampoo, or just the warmth of another being’s presence. But he didn’t feel haunted up here tonight. It felt like a home.

He knocked gently on her door.
