For an instant the world seemed to freeze in place.
Emilia gazed up into his blue eyes, which smoldered as if pale flames were trying to burn their way out.
He’s going to kiss me.
Instead of feeling disgusted, she found herself suddenly craving the heat of his mouth on hers, wondering what he would taste like, and whether he would pull her close to his big body as he kissed her.
But he broke eye contact suddenly, and time started again.
“It was just a little chocolate,” he murmured, drawing back his hand and sucking the crumb of chocolate into his sensual mouth, before turning and walking away.
Emilia stood rooted to the spot.
For a minute, she had been sure he was going to kiss her.
And she had wanted him to.
But of course, that was ridiculous. He would never want to kiss her, and she would never want to kiss him back even if he did.
As his footsteps echoed down the hall, she traced the path of his thumb on her cheek with her own hand, feeling dazed.
She had expected the job to be challenging.
But this was something else altogether.
