“Would you like it if I got more comfortable for our talk?” she asked.

He looked at the skintight dress and wondered how she could possibly get more comfortable. Unless she meant it literally and was going to go put on a track suit or some fuzzy pajamas.

When he didn’t respond right away, she slid her fingers along the straps of the dress and the slides released, allowing the whole front of the dress to lower, revealing large breasts with midnight-blue areolas.

She caressed them carelessly, a low moan issuing from her chest.

“That’s better,” she murmured, moving beside him on the sofa.

He leaned back and she placed a hand on his knee. Her nails were long and glossy-red.

He watched as she dragged her hand up his thigh.

It felt like an out of body experience. His heart wasn’t racing. He wasn’t excited to touch her. There was no chemistry. In fact, he felt nothing at all.

“Sorry,” he said firmly, covering her hand with his own.

She stopped immediately, as if she knew already that the night was over.

But instead of peeling herself off the sofa and covering her breasts, she leaned back and looked him in the eye.

“Most of my clients are looking for someone to talk to as much as they’re looking for a warm body,” she said, her voice soft and kind.

Suddenly, he could see the age around her eyes. She wasn’t just a sex worker. She was telling the truth.

“Your job can’t be easy,” he said, letting his guard down just a little.

“It’s not,” she said, nodding. “And I’m sorry that my job is necessary here. It’s tragic what happened to Ulfgard.”

He nodded in acknowledgement.

“I understand very well why many of my clients are reluctant,” she went on. “Was your wife one of The Women?”

He nodded once.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

“I don’t like to talk about it,” he said.

“Of course,” she replied. “What do you want to talk about?”

“What do you know about Terrans?” he heard himself ask.

“Oh, not much,” she said dismissively. “There aren’t many who can afford our services.”

“Are there Terrans in your industry?” he asked.

“Sure, we have every race you can imagine,” she laughed. “And a few you can’t.”

“So, what are they like?” he asked.

“Let’s see,” she said thoughtfully. “Of course, you know they were late to space travel, so they’re typically low on resources. And they don’t have the physical capabilities of many of the other races either. I would say that the thing that most sticks with me from the Terrans I’ve known is that they don’t seem to notice that they’re at a disadvantage. Or at least they don’t seem to care. They’re incredibly tenacious and determined.”

Ra’as nodded, smiling as he pictured Emilia yelling at him about the children’s dinner.

“You know a Terran?” she asked.

“My children’s new nanny,” he said. “I’ve met Terrans before, but never worked with one closely. What you’re saying makes sense though. I’ll keep it in mind.”
