It was definitely for her. There was no way to mistake it. The only thing she wasn’t sure of was the tone.
She pulled it down, folded it and put it in her pocket, instinctively patting her pocket afterward as if to be sure of it.
Opening the fridge, she saw a plate of pancakes drowning in jam on top of the soulless boxes of pale goo.
She smiled and took it down, suddenly feeling ravenous.
Grabbing a fork, she headed over to the counter that overlooked the rear property to eat.
The noon suns were both lighting up the lawn brilliantly, and for once, the property wasn’t cloaked in clouds and mist. She could see all the way past the labyrinth to the forest beyond.
It would be a wonderful day to continue work in the garden. They had mainly purchased seeds that needed time to mature, but she had also grabbed a few quick-climbing snapdragon-beans to grow up a bit of trellis. Maybe she could set that up and surprise the kids when they got home.
She took a bite of the pancakes. They were clearly made from that goo, but Ra’as and the kids had added enough berries to the batter and jam on top to counteract the bitterness. Even cold, the pancakes were delicious.
More importantly, Ra’as had taken the time to do something special with the kids, to make them happy.
Dyrk and Mimi were awesome companions. She felt a surge of pride for their father, that he was learning to enjoy a little downtime with them.
When she was finished, she washed up her dishes and headed outside to set up the trellis.
