Jasher sipped the cool air in an effort to bring down his blood pressure. “What’s up?” he finally managed.
“Accident on highway twenty-three. Possible fatalities. But the med-evac helicopter isn’t available.”
“What?” Jasher jogged over to the truck. “Turn that up.”
“Two fatalities, two life-threatening injuries.” The dispatcher on the scanner described the location of the wreck between two cars driven by teenage drivers near the sluice. Not surprising, as the sluice spanned a blind curve in a ravine. “We’re requesting all emergency personnel to be at the ready. No chopper is available.”
Where was the chopper?
“Come on.” He explained to Sage what was going on, as she’d been out of earshot while she slipped her sundress over her swimwear before climbing in next to him. Good thing, or he wouldn’t have been able to think properly in this key moment. “Let’s get back to town. Speed if you have to, Tyanne.”
Kids were involved. Jasher might be the only one in the county who could help, depending on what was wrong. He strained to hear more details on the dispatch. Surgeries were inevitable, and—
“Jasher.” Sage rested a hand on his knee. “I’ll be right by your side.”
