“I didn’t think you were.” His eyes searched hers. She knew she confused him, that he was trying to figure out why she’d flipped a switch from hot to cold. He was so wrong. She was still so hot.
“You’re not the same guy.”
“Understatement of the year,” he replied, warm breath exhaling.
“I’ve got a life here. A life I worked my ass off for.”
“So do I.”
“I’ve got Brandon. At least for now.” His brow furrowed a degree. She did not want to get into those details just yet. “He’s gotta be part of the picture. You’ve gotta accept that I’m not a mom, but I kind of am.”
“I think it’s beautiful, what you’re doing. There’s something about the kid. It’s crossed my mind more than once…I wouldn’t mind telling him more about Boss, if he still wants to know.”
“The timing—I shouldn’t do this.” Yet still, her hands didn’t unclench their grip upon him.
“Why not?” he breathed.
“What about Ashley?”
