Tyler grinned, the first real smile he’d worn since before that phone call with Isabella. “I’m thinking about joining Dixon Cattle’s legal team full-time and letting T.R. call the shots here while I’m gone. Figure you can homeschool back and forth between here and there.”

“Hell yeah,” Seth said enthusiastically. Tyler leveled a look at him, and Seth grinned. “I mean, yeah, that’s cool.”

“Good.” Tyler nodded toward the door. “Now watch your mouth and get to bed.”

Seth stood and began to walk out, and Tyler picked up his bottle to take another drink as exhaustion overcame him.

“Are you gonna get her back?” Seth hedged, lingering in the doorway.

But she had a soft spot for kids, and he knew she couldn’t bear to think she’d hurt them. He could still see Stevie chasing her down as she called the elevator, throwing his arms around her, and it was a stab in his chest that twisted every time he closed his eyes…

He grabbed up his phone. It was late. Nearing midnight. But what the hell, he’d text a Hail Mary and cross his fingers.
