“Wow. Couldn’t come at a better time, is what I say” I said. “Wow. What… wow.”

“Could you play tonight if you can,” he asked.

The turn of fortune felt wonderful and I said, “Great. Text me your address.”

A few seconds later, he said, “Sent.”

I looked at my texts and my heart sank. He was two states away. I stared at it for a second and then just started crying. Naturally, he had no idea what was going on. Although, I didn’t even know this guy at all, I just unloaded everything about my life; about how I’d just lost my apartment and didn’t have a place to stay and how he was nice to offer me the job, but I couldn’t get there and it didn’t matter because nothing ever worked out.

I told him I was a horrible, rotten screw-up. Now I had a real opportunity, I couldn’t take it. I told him I had asked to sleep with my landlord and it was wrong for me to try that anyway and I told him I’d spent three-and-a-half years trying to make it in the music business, but I couldn’t because I was horrible.

I couldn’t stop crying!

The poor man got a full rundown of my horrible life and all the ways I’d ruined it time and time again, until finally I just broke down into terrible, hopeless, ugly crying. This was my life. Every time I thought things might start going my way, the other shoe dropped. Every time I saw light at the end of the tunnel, it turned out to be a train.
